Lake Lanier
Lake Sidney Lanier, located in the foothills of the Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains, is situated 30 miles north of downtown Atlanta. The lake was formed by a damming of the Chattahoochee River in 1956, and encompasses 38,000 surface acres of water with 540 miles of shorelines. The deepest part of the lake is 160 feet, and the main dam is 192 feet high and 2,360 feet long. It remains the most visited Corps of Engineers project in the nation.
Boaters can enjoy and explore over 100 islands on the lake. The lake islands are a major resort - providing areas for picnicking, camping, beach areas, a water theme park, tennis courts, golf courses, rental boats, and hotel accommodations. Lake Lanier is noted for its fine black bass fishing, especially for spotted and largemouth bass. It is also the premier destination in Georgia for striped bass angling, with good numbers of trophy fish available.
